Google Plus, Panda and Social Integration | Marketing Smartt

Google Plus, Panda and Social Integration | Marketing Smartt | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
If you’ve used google to search something this week then chances are you’ve noticed some minor cosmetic differences they have implemented, such as the black toolbar at the top and the options on the left of your search results.

As an average user this might be all that you have seen and not taken much notice, but the reality is that this is just the tip of the iceberg of an entire suite of new products and changes that Google is rolling out this summer.

Changes that will affect what you use Google for, how your search results are delivered to you, what makes certain websites rank higher than others, and your overall activity on the web.

Facebook Ban Bot Like Google Panda Update for Facebook

Facebook Ban Bot Like Google Panda Update for Facebook | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
It seems as if Facebook has developed something of a shoot first ask questions later kind of mentality.

You may recall last week when Roger Ebert’s Facebook page was removed after complaints about him (following controversial comments made about the death of Jackass cast member Ryan Dunn).

It was reinstated shortly thereafter. You may also remember David Fagin, who decided to sue Facebook for a dollar after he was blocked from sending friend requests, and labeled a spammer.

Wondering how to respond to Google’s recent algorithm changes (known as Panda)?

In an interview with Wired Magazine, Udi Manber, Google’s head of search, said that Google will make as many as 550 changes to its search algorithm this year. One of the bigger changes happened this past winter in what has been called the Panda or Farmer update.

According to a report by Sistrix.com, within days of the update, a number of very large websites saw their Google rankings take a drastic drop. Sites such as Ezinearticles.com and Suite101.com lost 90% or more of their visibility on Google.

There’s some evidence that the Panda updates to Google’s ranking algorithm may be based upon a decision tree approach to classifying and creating quality scores for web pages and sites.

Curious as to whether Google might be using a decision tree approach to classify other information, I went digging through some of Google’s other patent filings that I might not covered here in the past.

Demand Media's eHow Slammed Again by Google's Panda 2 - Seeking Alpha

I believe that Google's (GOOG) latest algorithm update, targeting low quality content sites, has impacted Demand Media (DMD) for the second time in 3 months.

On April 14, I broke the news that the second Google update targeting content farms, dubbed Panda 2 by the search engine community, had unexpectedly impacted eHow search rankings. Since then, the stock has dropped precipitously - but things have only gotten worse.

Not to web sites that have been built and maintained exclusively for the purpose of making money through ads.

22 User Experience Factors To Consider Post-Panda

22 User Experience Factors To Consider Post-Panda | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
On February 23rd of 2011, Google put in place an algorithm change known as “Panda”. Historically, Google’s algorithm was intended to determine “what is this website about?”

The next step is about really considering the way that users interact with the content on a website. The new Panda algorithm aims to better evaluate the quality of content and user experience on a site.

With that in mind, here are 22 user experience factors that Google has data on, and is likely considering in their algorithm.

Google Panda 2.2 Did Hit Without Google Confirmation | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
Panda 2.2, I believe, it 100% underway as of late last week. We had some early reports earlier this month, which may not have been a Panda update or maybe some small tests.

But last week, June 16th, we reported the 2.2 rollout and I honestly think this is the 2.2 roll out. I wasn't 100% sure back then but I am really confident 2.2 has been rolled out.

The results?

Indeed, there are a bunch of webmasters on the Digital Point and WebmasterWorld forums claiming their PageRank has changed. It was last updated in January.

Google Panda 2.2: Weeding Out More Content Farms and Scrapers

Google Panda 2.2: Weeding Out More Content Farms and Scrapers | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
Thanks to a recent update earlier this year to search giant Google’s ranking factors, the web will hopefully soon be devoid of the giant content farms and scrapers that have plagued search results in recent years. Part 2.2 of the Panda update went live in mid-June as Google confirmed last week, so users should continue to see improved search results.

One of the most important aspects of this particular update is improved scraper detection. Up until now, there were a lot of sites out there that just scrape and re-publish content, and due to better (read: questionable) SEO practices, they ranked better in search results than the original content. Obviously this is a problem, and Google is working to address it.

How Google's Panda Update Changed SEO Best Practices Forever - Whiteboard Friday

How Google's Panda Update Changed SEO Best Practices Forever - Whiteboard Friday | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
It's here! Google has released Panda update 2.2, just as Matt Cutts said they would at SMX Advanced here in Seattle a couple of weeks ago.

This time around, Google has - among other things - improved their ability to detect scraper sites and banish them from the SERPs. Of course, the Panda updates are changes to Google's algorithm and are not merely manual reviews of sites in the index, so there is room for error (causing devastation for many legitimate webmasters and SEOs).

A lot of people ask what parts of their existing SEO practice they can modify and emphasize to recover from the blow, but alas, it's not that simple.

In this week's Whiteboard Friday, Rand discusses how the Panda updates work and, more importantly, how Panda has fundamentally changed the best practices for SEO. Have you been Panda-abused? Do you have any tips for recuperating? Let us know in the comments!

Google Panda Webmaster Tools Notifications Needed?

Google Panda Webmaster Tools Notifications Needed? | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
As many of you know by now, Panda 2.2 is now confirmed to have rolled out and some sites have seen recoveries while others have not, and others were now hit.

Danny Sullivan wrote a nice explanation on how Panda is more a ranking factor than a algorithm update. He gets into it in detail, but what Panda clearly is, is a penalty that downgrades the rankings of a site for having low quality content.

If it is an algorithm update or ranking factor - to me, isn't that important. The result, Google flags your site as having low quality content, you then get pandalized and your whole site can suffer.

Is The Google Panda Update Fair?

Is The Google Panda Update Fair? | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
In 2011 Google rolled out one of the biggest updates to its search engine, the Google Panda update, also referred to as the Farmer Update. The first tranche of the update was in February 2011 and affected all English language sites in America. The second tranche of the update was in April 2011 and affected all other English language sites.

There is a lot of conflicting opinion on whether this update was good or not. Many webmasters and blog owners feel that it was unfair as they lost a lot of traffic. Google say that users have reported improvements in search results, although a majority of Google users are totally unaware that any change took place.

Google Quietly Launches Panda Update Version 2.2

Google Quietly Launches Panda Update Version 2.2 | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
Webmasters and SEOs suspected the next wave of Google's Panda update began hitting last week, with reports coming in of traffic drops, as well as some recoveries starting around June 16. And it seems that is the case, as Google has today confirmed the arrival of what is being dubbed Google Panda Version 2.2.

As is typical of Google, they're revealing nearly nothing about what this tweak is targeting. As yet, Google hasn't made an official announcement of the rollout of the algorithmic change on a company blog, though Google has recently tried to downplay Panda, noting that Panda is just one of about 500 algorithmic search tweaks Google makes each year.

Google Panda 2.2 Update Suspected to Be Live

Google Panda 2.2 Update Suspected to Be Live | Google Penalty World | Scoop.it
A couple weeks ago, Google’s Matt Cutts talked about a new iteration of Google’s Panda update, which he said was already approved and would be hitting soon. The update has been commonly referred to throughout the search industry as “Panda 2.2″.

This version is expected to more heavily address the issue of scraped content, an issue that continues to plague the web and Google’s search results (the scraped content often ranks higher than the original) even post-Panda.

Cutts is quoted as saying in a liveblog of an SMX Advanced session, “A guy on my team [is] working on that issue. A change has been approved that should help with that issue. We’re continuing to iterate on Panda. The algorithm change originated in search quality, not the web spam team.”

Google has not made any announcements or references indicating that the update has gone live yet, but webmasters are thinking it might have been released.
