P2P Lab's Plans for 2016 | P2P Foundation

P2P Lab's Plans for 2016 | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Our 2015 research has mostly been theory-driven, focused on transitional scenarios and visions for a commons-oriented society and economy. In 2016, P2P lab collaborators will try to ground these arguments and the, currently, tentative policy proposals on strong empirical evidence towards a more rigorous scientific treatment of the topic. Our first and foremost goal is …

Greenstone, a powerful mesh extender for FireChat | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Fire Chat has already been mentioned here in the context of enabling peer-to-peer networking during the recent protests in Hong Kong, now I am glad to see that they are planning to produce a device which will further empower this mesh networking concept: “Open Garden, the company behind FireChat, is taking mesh networking beyond our …

Technology Networks for Socially Useful Production » Journal of Peer Production

Technology Networks for Socially Useful Production » Journal of Peer Production | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
With unemployment reaching one in eight workers, and manufacturing in steep decline in the city, Londoners voted an avowedly socialist Labour council into power in 1981. Left-wing leaders of the Greater London Council (GLC) were committed to a radically alternative economic strategy compared to the “free-market” right-wing agenda of the Thatcher government nationally. The GLC quickly instituted a Greater London Enterprise Board (GLEB) committed to job creation, industrial democracy, and socially useful production.

Podcast of the day: Tim Jordan on Hacking and Communicative Practices After the Internet

Podcast of the day: Tim Jordan on Hacking and Communicative Practices After the Internet | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Lastly, I’m thrilled to post Show #192, August 23, my interview with Tim Jordan of King’s College London on hacking. Tim is (and has been) doing fascinating work on the question of how the Internet has changed communication practices. Drawing on the worlds of 19th century Australian pioneers and modern-day virtual world gamers,Internet, Society and Culture: Communicative Practices Before and After the Internet, published by Bloomsbury, was a terrific book from which to draw many enlightening and fun points of discussion. I learned much and loved the interview.”

Furtherfield and Contemporary Art Culture - Where We Are Now | www.furtherfield.org

Furtherfield and Contemporary Art Culture - Where We Are Now | www.furtherfield.org | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For over 17 years Furtherfield has been working in practices that bridge arts, technology, and social change. Over these years we have been involved in many great projects, and have collaborated with and supported a variety of talented people. Our artistic endeavors include net art, media art, hacking, art activism, hacktivism and co-curating. We have always believed that it is essential that the individuals at the heart of Furtherfield practice in arts and technology are engaged in critical enquiry. For us art is not just about running a gallery or critiquing art for art’s sake. The meaning of the art is in perpetual flux, and we examine its changing relationship with the human condition. Furtherfield’s role and direction as an arts collective is shaped by the affinities we identify among diverse independent thinkers, individuals and groups who have questions to ask in their work about the culture.

Our Generation of Hackers

Our Generation of Hackers | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We are all hackers now, apparently—or are trying to be. Guilty as charged. I am writing these words, as I write most things, not with a pen and paper, or a commercial word processor, but on Emacs, a command-line text editor first developed in the 1970s for that early generation of free-software hackers. I had to hack it, so to speak, with a few crude lines of scripting code in order that it would properly serve my purposes as a writer. And it does so extremely well, with only simple text files, an integrated interpreter for the Markdown markup language, and as many split screens as I want. I get to feel clever and devious every time I sit down to use it.
