Biomedical applications of microneedles in therapeutics: recent advancements and implications in drug delivery

Biomedical applications of microneedles in therapeutics: recent advancements and implications in drug delivery | Intra-Dermal drug delivery: Opportunities and Challenges? | Scoop.it
This review explores the feasibility of innovative MNs used as a drug delivery carrier. Because most of the SMNs and HMNs have many limitations, it is difficult to achieve therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, many scientists are investigating functional modifications of MNs through covalent and non-covalent methods, especially for CMNs and DMNs. The biomedical applications of MNs are growing and new exciting improvements could be achieved, thus resulting in better micro/nano technologies in the near future.

Microneedle patch a painless way to deliver vaccines

Researchers at MIT are developing a method of delivering vaccines with patches of tiny needles that would embed a substance containing the vaccine onto the skin, much like a tattoo. The technique would eliminate the need of a syringe. The microneedles would measure 250 microns wide by 650 microns long, and would be coated with a biodegradable film comprised of layers of polymers containing the vaccine. The patch of microneedles would penetrate the skin less than a millimeter (650 microns) deep, enough to deliver the vaccine, but not deep enough to affect blood vessels and nerve endings to cause pain. The patch would embed the film into the skin. The film would gradually wear away over a sustained period of time, gradually releasing the vaccine into the skin.

Are Microneedles the New Lasers? Doctors Talk About the Next Big Aesthetic Trend | Intra-Dermal drug delivery: Opportunities and Challenges? | Scoop.it

For years, we’ve been told to break habits that hurt our skin (i.e. don’t pick at scabs) but could we be doing it wrong? Could hurting our skin actually make it look better? Many plastic surgeons and dermatologists say yes.
RealSelf asked 500 board-certified doctors to predict the hot aesthetic trend for 2016. The answer that came up most often? Microneedling.

Prototype Device Allows for Real-Time White Cell Counts Through the Skin, Personalized Chemotherapy

Prototype Device Allows for Real-Time White Cell Counts Through the Skin, Personalized Chemotherapy | Intra-Dermal drug delivery: Opportunities and Challenges? | Scoop.it
Team Leuko, an international group collaborating between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a handful of centers, hospitals, and foundations primarily located in Madrid, Spain, has developed a device that counts patients’ white blood cells in real-time through the skin (i.e., without drawing blood). With the use of this device, patients undergoing chemotherapy will be able to track their immune behavior responsively, much as diabetics can quickly gauge and react to their blood glucose levels.

Yotam Levin's insight:

Sounds amazing. i wonder if they could differentiate leuko from lymphocytes, in which case this has far greater applicability..

But even so, this could be the equivalent of oximetry to CBC (at least WBC)

Needle-Free Devices, Technologies and Global Markets

Needle-Free Devices, Technologies and Global Markets | Intra-Dermal drug delivery: Opportunities and Challenges? | Scoop.it
In recent years there has been a growing concern regarding needle-based drug delivery devices due to needle phobia, increasing cases of needlestick injuries and the transmission of blood-borne diseases. Needle-free drug delivery devices are considered as an effective alternative and novel technique to introduce drugs into a patient's body without invading the skin with a needle. It is growing in popularity and has received considerable attention during the past few years primarily due to painless, effective and safe drug delivery methods. Needle-free drug delivery devices typically include needle-free injectors, inhalers, transdermal patches and other devices based on novel needle technologies (e.g., microneedles and advanced pen needles).

Carl Schoellhammer, Inventor of the Microneedle Pill

Carl Schoellhammer, winner of the 2015 Lemelson-MIT National Collegiate Student prize in the "Cure it!" graduate category is developing two inventions that will drastically enhance pain-free drug delivery in patients via the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. His first invention, the Microneedle Pill (mPill), allows medicine that is traditionally administered by painful injection to be ingested orally. The ingestible capsule has small micron-scale needles protruding from it, which introduce the drug directly into the GI tissue in a painless and safe manner. His second invention, the Ultrasound Probe (uProbe), enables the fast, local delivery of therapeutics to the GI tract by using low frequency ultrasound to physically drive medication into tissue painlessly.

Methylene Blue-Loaded Dissolving Microneedles: Potential Use in Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy of Infected Wounds | Intra-Dermal drug delivery: Opportunities and Challenges? | Scoop.it
Photodynamic therapy involves delivery of a photosensitising drug that is activated by light of a specific wavelength, resulting in generation of highly reactive radicals. This activated species can cause destruction of targeted cells. Application of this process for treatment of microbial infections has been termed "photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy" (PACT).

First ever 3D printed micro-needles a pain-free way to deliver drugs | Intra-Dermal drug delivery: Opportunities and Challenges? | Scoop.it
Scientists from the University of Akron and University of Texas today announced a pioneering technique for producing 3D micro-printed needles. The needles, measuring no more than 1 mm high, are made from a biomaterial that after painlessly delivering the drug would simply degrade into the patient’s body. They could be used to treat a wide range of diseases including skin cancer and help reduce the stigma associated with injections.
